About BreedsPedia
BreedsPedia is an independent encyclopedia of dog and cat breeds, built to give future pet owners the information they actually need — presented clearly, in their own language, without the noise.
Why We Built BreedsPedia
When we started looking for a dog, we were struck by how fragmented the information online was. Some sites gave long lists with no way to filter; others hid breed details behind ads or registration walls. Cat breed resources were even harder to find in languages other than English.
We built BreedsPedia to solve that problem. Our goal is a single, trustworthy reference for anyone who wants to understand a breed before committing to years of life together. That means covering temperament, grooming needs, activity levels, compatibility with children and other pets, and realistic cost estimates — all in six languages.
Our Editorial Approach
Every breed page on BreedsPedia follows a consistent structure: an introduction that sets the breed in context, followed by sections on appearance, character, care, training, living conditions, and price ranges. We write in a factual but accessible style — no hyperbole, no vague generalities.
For dogs, we rely on structured data from TheDogAPI, enriched with coat colors sourced from Wikipedia's breed infoboxes and price ranges drawn from specialist databases. For cats, we use TheCatAPI's numeric trait system — covering affection, energy, grooming needs, and social behaviour — to generate descriptions that are specific rather than generic.
Our Data Sources
Breed facts (weight, height, lifespan, temperament, breed group) come from TheDogAPI and TheCatAPI — two of the most widely used breed databases, maintained by specialist communities. We cross-reference this data with information from national kennel clubs and Wikipedia's veterinary articles when discrepancies arise.
Price information is necessarily approximate. Puppy prices vary enormously by country, breeder reputation, and market trends. Where real-world price data is available we use it; where it is not, we estimate based on breed group and scarcity — and we always flag which category an estimate falls into so readers can calibrate accordingly.
Six Languages, One Standard
BreedsPedia is available in English, Italian, Spanish, French, German, and Portuguese. All content is written natively in each language — we do not machine-translate and paste. Breed names are localized where a well-established local name exists (for example, the Dachshund is called "Bassotto" in Italian), and measurement units, grammar, and article conventions are adapted for each language.
Our localization covers not just the user interface but the editorial content itself: temperament descriptions, breed group labels, country names, and FAQ answers are all rendered in the reader's language from the start.
Independence and Transparency
BreedsPedia is an independent project. We do not sell specific dogs or cats, we do not endorse individual breeders, and we are not affiliated with any kennel club or breed association. Our recommendations — such as lifestyle matching via the Find My Breed quiz — are based solely on publicly available breed characteristics, not on commercial relationships.
